Page 44

And here it finally is; the final page of Chapter II: “Across The Mojave.” This is a pretty big moment for the story. It’s revealing a desolate Los Angeles. The key was to make it recognizable as LA, despite the fact that it is 150 years in the future. Overall I’m super-happy with this page. I definitely spent lots more time on this page than any preceding page, and I hope that it’s apparent.

I wanna point out something on this page. The shoreline has risin inland and runs through downtown LA. I want to apologize in advance to the angry residents of Santa Monica, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Carson, Torrance, Long Beach and surrounding areas, southwest of LA, for suggesting your cities will be underwater in 2152. But it’s pretty accurate. If our polar ice caps melt, our water levels will rise, and the first things to go are the costal cities. Ironically, it was fun to come up with this concept. I hope this page speaks to you and hopefully serves as a visual of a possible future, if we don’t increase our green efforts across the world. Now as for the desolate part, You’ll just have to wait to see what that is all about.

Which brings me to announcing Chapter III: “The Weeping Angel.” The first page of which (Page 45), will be released on March 31. In the meantime I’ll be working on the first two SSW books which I hope you have heard of by now. I’m, also working on some special “important to the story” things to post, to keep the site active until Chapter III starts. So you’ll still have reasons to visit until then.

So here are some possible topics of discussion which would help me in the coming weeks, as I get everything prepped:
- What was your favorite part/page of Chapter I or II?
- Do you have any constructive criticism in reference to the story?
- What do you thing of the website as a whole and the weekly posts?
- What would you like to see in the SSW books that you really like about other print comics/graphic novels?

Or if you have a question for me, now would be an excellent time to ask. I sincerely hope you’ve all enjoyed SSW thus far, and can’t wait to continue it. I’ve only just begun.

P.S. Remember to vote for sswestern by clicking the button below. It’s super quick and it would help out a lot. My ranking is 152 as of this posting. That is up from 250 just 1 week before. My goal is to get on the front page by breaking rank 100. i know I can get there, but i need you’re help. Thanx a trill.

    wow. impressive [:

Wow man, i just say that i am THOROUGHLY IMPRESSED! This by far is the most artistic page you have done, it shows the most improvement in your artistic skills to date! I almost want to say you should make this a print, I’d love to have this one framed over my desk (minus of course the dialogue)! Sadly, I’d also like to say, if the future is this grim for Los Angeles, hopefully it will at least look as good as your artwork does? lol

…but seriously kids Global Warming isn’t Fun Anymore! haha. Do you by any chance have any good links from the Intermets where we can see some stats on global warming that support your idea about LA possibly being over come by water? I’m sure you didn’t just come up with that out of the top of your head.

Anyway, I’m disappointed that i have to wait so long for some more the the main part of the story, but the “important to the story” sounds cool too, and i definitely can’t wait for the books! :D

Isnt NY supposed to be covered in water? Or at least has a higher chance than LA?

      • joenis

To be honest I’m not even sure. I was paying attention to the whole global warming thing a lot more back in college but once i graduated I sorta dumped off with that sort of stuff …guess since I wasn’t surrounded by hippies anymore I started thinking bout it less. It’s kind of why i asked him for some links in the first place… Anyway, yeah I could believe that happening to NYC though, most of it is right against the water.. Long Island is completely surrounded by it isn’t it? I’m sure that place would be fucked! If you look at LA though, is a perfect basin to get filled up with water; the fact that is closed in by mountains and so close to the waters edge I’d assume it would go under pretty easily.

        You’re right about NY…

But about the links Joenis wanted, My main source was the film ‘An Inconvenient Truth.’ Al Gore has a really cool animated simulation on what it would look like. Thats movie is also what inspired me to include global warming in the backdrop of the story in the first place.

Having said that, I am definitely stretching reality a bit for artistic purposes :D

        • joenis

I’m assuming then that that film is actually worth watching then?

…again.. i love this picture. I may have to request a print of this regardless if you sell prints of it.

I would just like to point out that there are a number of reasons that global warming, whether it’s happening or not is NOT the fault of humans, despite what Al Gore wants you to think. The idea that humans can have such a large effect on something as complex as the Earth seems quite arrogant to me.

Also, I have heard two things from too many reliable sources to discount:

          1. Carbon dioxide has much less effect on trapping of heat and thus global warming than water vapor does, so a lot of the anti-carbon hippies are wrong on at least one count.

          2. Global temperatures have not risen noticeably since 1998, and in fact there has been a slight decrease.

Now, in response to the request for links already stated above, here we go. (By the way, all I did was put global temperatures into google and it provided me with the addition of “since 1998″ my search terms weren’t in any way biased towards either warming or cooling, and so The fact that 4 of the top 6 results indicated cooling, I’m going with that)

Now, the Boston Globe has a report from the beginning of 2008 about 2007’s temperatures and the overall trend here.
There is also a number of helpful graphs and information here. *NOTE: I did notice as I was grabbing the link that this does seem to be a heavily biased site, but enough of the data matches up with what I’ve seen elsewhere that I believe it’s still valid.
Two more articles here and here support the idea.

P.S. I’m not looking for a flame war, I just want to get people to open their minds and think about things, if you still believe in global warming after some digging, that’s fine, I still won’t until I see enough independent evidence to confirm the wild speculations.

          • ali

You don’t have to worry. You make some interesting points. I’m glad my comic has inspired you to respond. Anyways, I’m only using global warming as a backdrop; to add depth to my “universe.” Global Warming plays no real role in the plot of SSW.

            Thanks again and keep reading!

          • joenis

thanks for the links, i didn’t think anyone would actually post any. I’ll read em in a bit. I’m glad you pointed out that it’s a “Biased” site. Seems one problem with things like that is that once someone takes a side either way on an argument it always becomes super biased. Unfortunate but because of that we all just gotta do our own reading and make a judgement call on our own based on our own research i guess (providing sources are reliable of course).

Either way, from what I’ve seen in both arguments, wither i believe it yet or not i think we should all at least take this message to heart “lets just stop fucking up the earth with trash”
